Dowagiac River Michigan Trout Fishing Conditions
Cass County spring creek with wild brown trout. One of southern Michigan's best trout streams. Cold, clear, and spring-fed year-round. Surprisingly good fishing for the latitude.
The Dowagiac is one of southern Michigan's premier trout streams. A true spring creek with cold, clear, groundwater-fed flows that maintain trout temperatures even in August. Wild brown trout thrive here in the rolling farmland of Cass County, far from the crowds of northern Michigan.
Spring creek fishing demands precision: light tippet (6X-7X), small flies (#18-22), and a delicate presentation. The Dowagiac rewards technical anglers. BWOs, tricos, and terrestrials are the primary dry fly game. Subsurface, small pheasant tails and midge patterns produce year-round. Wading is easy on the sandy/gravel bottom, and hip waders are usually sufficient.
