The Paint River is one of Michigan's finest Blue Ribbon trout streams and a federally designated Wild and Scenic River. It flows through Iron County in the western UP with two main branches: the North Branch and South Branch converge near Crystal Falls. Both branches hold excellent populations of wild brook trout and brown trout.

Old logging dam remnants create deep holding pools where large brook trout hide. The stretch near Crystal Falls has convenient access, but the best fishing is often upstream where fewer anglers venture. Regulations are complex and section-specific: check your DNR pamphlet carefully before heading out. A fly rod and small dries or nymphs are the standard approach, though gear-restricted sections require artificial flies only.
