The Black River system near South Haven flows through Van Buren County to Lake Michigan. Two main branches (South and Middle) converge before reaching the lake. Fall steelhead and salmon runs draw anglers to the lower river. Some resident brown trout in the cooler upstream sections.
Primarily a steelhead and salmon river. The fall run season (September through November) is the main event. For resident trout, the South Branch above Bangor holds browns in the spring. Standard Great Lakes steelhead tactics: egg patterns, nymphs, and streamers in the deeper runs.
